The school sports facilities of the municipality of Gijon Joaquin Fidalgo Diaz

This study has collected the growing concern of Physical Education teachers about the scarcity and state of abandonment of sports facilities in secondary schools in the municipality of Gijón. The seriousness of the situation is such that in certain centres there are school periods in which the students have to stay in the ordinary classroom, receive class in a small porch, in the corridor, in the changing rooms, get wet when it rains, share small spaces with other groups or, in the best of cases, give class in a tiny gymnasium. The results have revealed a situation of precariousness and lack of concern on the part of the educational administrations for these spaces, in such a way that only one of the 13 schools meets the minimum requirements set out in the regulations. Physical Education is the only form of physical activity that reaches 100% of the population, so investment in these infrastructures should be a priority and non-negotiable in order to start teaching quality classes, fulfilling the teaching programs and minimizing risks to the physical integrity of the students.
