This study is carried out in order to answer the problem of knowing the situation of the economy of tourism in Algeria. It is based on the one hand on the study of the evolution of the Algerian tourist market, i.e. the trends of evolution of the tourist offer and demand from 1999 to 2018, and on the other hand on the study of the contribution of tourism in the national economy through the study of the balance of payments -for travel-, and its contribution in employment and in the GDP. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive approach was used on data from the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts and the National Statistics Office. The results showed, firstly, that Algeria experienced an evolution in the tourist market during the period studied, but the tourist offer represented by the hotel establishments and the hotel capacity did not meet the tourist demand represented by the incoming tourists, and secondly, the contribution of the tourist sector in Algeria remained weak in spite of the fact that it experienced certain evolutions.
