The paper shows that the struggle for existence and natural selection is an inherent property of systems with choice, which the author calls selective systems, proves that the struggle for existence and natural selection are the main driving forces in the development of personality and society. The connection of these processes with values is shown. The representation of values as dynamic prohibitions is developed. The close connection between selective systems and values is substantiated. On the basis of these theoretical positions a number of mental phenomena, such as freedom, the meaning of life, compatibility of partners, neurosis, addictions, choice of a profession, professional burnout are explained.
