Improvement of emergency medical care is one of the priority scientific and practical tasks of public health. The ambulance service remains one of the most demanded and the most problematic areas of it. The paper gives an overview of the current state of emergency medical care service in Russia and foreign countries. The author characterizes the medical and demographic situation, morbidity and the rate of people seeking emergency medical care in the sparsely populated areas of Northwestern Russia. On the basis of monitoring of emergency medical care in the Republic of Karelia the main problems are revealed and the ways to solve them are developed. The work proposes indicators for evaluating the activity of emergency medical care services. The separate section of the book is devoted to forecasting in extreme medicine.
