African Indigenous Churches, Polygamy and Hiv and Aids: the Case of the Mutima Church in Zambia
Bridget Nonde Masaiti
The book highlights the dangers posed by polygamous marriages that are reinforced in the church in the context of HIV and Aids. While the church is a place where many women in Africa find comfort and express their lived experiences, some African Indigenous Churches allow one man to marry two or more women. Since HIV testing is not a norm in this church, the author argues that polygamy contributes to the spread of HIV and Aids, because the majority of HIV transmission in the church occurs through heterosexual contact.
