Diet plays an important role in preventing oral diseases . There is strong evidence that vegetables and fruits protect against these diseases, however, the active constituents are incompletely identified. Dental diseases impairs quality of life and have a negative impact on self-esteem, eating ability and health, causing pain, anxiety and impaired social functioning . Good oral health care and nutrition during pregnancy, infancy, and childhood are essential but often overlooked factors in the growth and development of the teeth and oral cavity. Collaboration between dietetics professionals and oral health care professionals is essential in identifying, educating, and treating oral health problems related to nutrition. The text provides an overview of the evidence for an association between diet, nutrition and oral diseases and to clarify areas of uncertainty.
