The purpose of this study was to assess the level of fasting plasma glucose, zinc level, C-peptide level and HbA1c in type II diabetes mellitus (DM) population of Bangladesh and to correlate the values with several markers of zinc level. Since Zinc plays a clear role in the synthesis, storage and secretion of insulin as well as conformational integrity of insulin in hexameric form, the decreased Zn, which affects the ability of the islet cell to produce and secrete insulin, might then compound the problem, particularly in Type II diabetes. This study was conducted in Nutrition lab, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka. The Zinc level was very much low in type II diabetes patients than it was in the control group. C-peptide production was also very low in type II diabetes patients than it was in the control group. The subjects are categorized according to Control Group and Hyperglycemic Group and it was found that mean value of FPG, ABF and HbA1c were higher in hyperglycemic group than it was in the control group. In our study we found that serum zinc level was approximately 56 % lower in the diabetes group (p > 0.001).
