Orphan Diseases and Drugs ? Widen the Horizon: Revisiting the Ancient Vedic Knowledge
Gurpreet Randhawa
Looking at the plight of people suffering from unknown ailments, this book is an effort to integrate the modern science with vedic scriptures of India (with oldest surviving civilization) to help them out from hopelessness. To bring a new drug molecule into market, ~ 500 million dollars and 12- 15 years of time is required. After all the efforts, only a handful of patients of orphan diseases are able to benefit from them. Ancient Vedas (~6000 year old) have enumerated ways of prevention and cure of infectious diseases by organizing daily Yagyas and for prevention of genetic disorders by observing certain sanskars (sacraments). The sanskars revolve around purity of mind and action and incorporates the concepts of genetic counseling. The concepts of Yagya and sanskars are based upon sound scientific knowledge. Why not revisit and adopt them in our daily routines to ameliorate the sufferings of modern man, and save time and money in the process?
