Performance and Rehearsal Practices of Minimalist Music: Specifically Related to Music for Eighteen Musicians by Steve Reich
Callum Moncrieff
There is a vast body of minimalist music but not much has been written about the rehearsal and performance practices associated with this style. As well as a description of minimalist music and its history, this book provides an introduction to some of the practices. It is by no means definitive but addresses many issues specific to one work, which can then be applied to other works in the genre. Music for Eighteen Musicians is Steve Reich's seminal work of minimalist music. This book bases much of its study on interviews held with performers after a performance of the work at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. This book will be useful for any musician who performs minimalist music. The book also includes interviews with world-renowned performers of minimalist music, Russell Hartenberger and Steven Schick. Essentially, the issues raised can be applied to rehearsal and performance practices in any style of music.
