The book investigates treatment seeking behavior andthe potential of encouraging effective treatment withprepayment schemes as a strategy in the control ofmalaria. Early detection, prompt and effectivetreatment are still the most effective ways ofmanaging malaria in most endemic areas but all thesemeans are hindered by scarcity of resources. Lowhealth care expenditure in many developing countriesis associated with limited tax revenue and budgetstringencies. User charges have undesirable equityeffects and debt financing is unsustainable. Theabove suggest a need for alternative approach tofinancing health care in general and to financingpreventive diseases in particular to reduce theirburden. This book shed light on household malariatreatment seeking behavior and the factors affectingthe choice of treatment options under a user feesscheme as well as ex ante demand for malaria careunder a prepayment scheme. This book should be usefulto anyone interested in understanding the social andeconomic aspects of malaria and the potentialbenefits of using financing policies towards thecontrol of malaria as well as other tropical diseasesin developing countries.
