Corporate Social Responsibility has in recent yearsexperienced a strong development from being seen as aPR and marketing tool, to the integrated managementconcept it is today. In this work the author analyses the implementationof the CSR concept into daily business operations andthe context to sustainable production technologies. As Asia is one of todays fast developing economicregions, the author focused his research on the twobest practice companies Tata Steel in India andToyota Motors in Japan. The core of this researchconsists of a thorough analysis of the companies CSRactivities and performance, as well as of a closeexamination of the countries CSR perception, development and future trends. Local culture, leadership principles and performance indicators, aresome of the highlighted success factors of CSRimplementation. Potential for future research andconsulting is further discussed. The relevance of sustainability to productiontechnologies, the respective influence of localculture and the extensive information on CSR theory, related concepts and instruments, make this work aunique reference to understand CSR and itsimplementation in a cultural context.
