A Child's History of England is a book written by Charles Dickens. Dickens brought his skills as a novelist to his description of the key events and personages of English history, resulting in a vivid and highly readable account which enjoyed immense popularity as a serial and, later, in book form. The book was adopted as a text book in British schools and was in use well into the first half of the 20th century, despite the fact that many critics pointed out that the book was not well researched and not always historically accurate. A Child's History of England covers the period of English history from approximately 50 B. C. to around 1669 A. D., with an additional summary of the events leading up to the reign of Queen Victoria. Charles Dickens wrote A Child's History of England when he was at the height of his powers as a novelist, immediately after the publication of his huegely successful David Copperfield and the acclaimed Bleak House. He dedicated his book to "My own dear children, whom I hope it may help, bye and bye, to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject".
