When Cavanagh befriends Professor Deeping on board the Mandalay, little does he realize that he has entered into a world of Eastern assassins, the world of the Hashishîn. For Deeping has stolen a holy relic, a slipper belonging to Mohammed, and is now being pursued by someone named Hassan of Aleppo, whose duty it is to guard and return the relic.
