She has served as an Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University, and the Director of Partners in Progress at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. She has been an assistant superintendent, a principal, and assistant principal. Dr. Smith co-authored "The Teaching Game: A Psychological Approach to Understanding Student Behavior and Poor School Performance" and its accompanying study guide.
