Based on many years of practical experiences with NGOs, largely in Africa, this book argues that for capacity building programmes to be more effective we must: better appreciate the complex and highly personal dimensions to organisational change, organisations cannot change unless people change; understand the culture and context within which the capacity building takes place and adjust the programmes accordingly; and consciously learn from our capacity building work by taking the monitoring and evaluation of our work much more seriously.
