The last of my lovely boys walked out of my life today. Who are these lovely boys? They are the "quads", the author's extended family of four-legged creatures - her horses. The author carries us away on a fascinating journey through her life back to the Second World War when she was evacuated to Devon, to her marriage, through her farming career in a pre-technical era and finally to her present-day retirement without her horses. In her earlier days country life saw chickens roaming freely, milking done by hand and working horses playing a vital role in the farm's operation. But, the author gives us more than a nostalgic look back to days gone by. We see the reality of back-breaking work, the worries of livestock health, the financial setbacks. And we get a wonderful insight into the unique world of horse care and breeding. This is as charming and entertaining a book of reminiscences as you could wish for. It will leave you, like the author, with a true appreciation of the wisdom of animals.
