Fifty years ago nursing was a very different affair to what it is today: a nurse was responsible for everything associated with a patient's care, from medical treatment to laundering and cleaning to emotional support, and in the immediate post-war period nurses had to overcome the restraints of continued rationing, archaic equipment and the dreaded London smog in one of the most challenging but valuable professions there are. Dorothy Gill, after qualifying in General Nursing, went on to train as a Midwife and practised in the HNS and Army, then went on to ward sistership and finally training with 'distinction in practise' as a Sister Tutor, emulating the inspirational Tutor of preliminary training school days of 1949.
