This detailed study of socio-economic change in the Vera Basin, Almeria, from the 5th to 11th century AD draws on recent survey data as well as information from investigations carried out in the late 19th and early 20th century. Sites within the Vera Basin are studied in time and space, looking in particular at the spatial characteristics of materiality. Broad trends in settlement and economic shifts are outlined, including periods of settlement nucleation and dispersal, demographic growth and decline, intensive versus extensive agriculture and peaks and troughs in production activities such as metalworking and pottery.
