This collection of eleven interdisciplinary papers, from the third German Archaeological Congress of the Roman Archaeology group at Heidelberg in May 1999, aims to integrate archaeological, natural science and environmental studies to provide a detailed picture of Roman activity, predominantly in central Europe. Subjects include: imperial care and regulations during earthquakes; the climatic catastrophe of AD 200; land use in the North Alpine region; dendrochronology and ceramic analysis. The vicus of Tienen in Belgium and the fort at Rainau-Buch are among the sites discussed.
