A lawyer's letter brings twenty-one year old Chantal Lawrence to France where she is astonished to learn that she has been left a fortune by her French mother, Madeleine, who died in unexplained circumstances some seventeen years earlier. On moving into her mother's farmhouse, Chantal comes across a bundle of old letters which give details of a clandestine love affair concerning a close friend of Madeleine's.
Prompted by this discovery, Chantal embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery, little realising she is putting herself in danger. As she digs deeper, she encounters a number of issues which further complicate the secrecy surrounding her mother's death. Misunderstandings abound until Chantal finds herself fleeing for her life across the French countryside.
