In 'Betrayal' United States Military Intelligence field officer, Major Falzoni collects classified information, at various pre-arranged pick-up points across Europe, from a mysterious Russian mole periodically touring foreign countries on Soviet Industrial Product delegation duties, and known initially only by CIA codename, COMPASS. Increased suspicion and subsequent tightening of security surveillance by Soviet State Secret Police, GRU (Glavnoye Razvedyatelnoye Upravleniye), cause the mole to consider defecting to the West. The Major is assigned to aiding COMPASS escape. However, escalation of war between American Forces and Communist Forces in Vietnam cause the Major's mission to help COMPASS escape to the West to be temporarily replaced by the need for an urgent re-assignment to infiltrate dangerous Asian territory to seek out and bring back information on secret VietCong locations vital to American Forces.
