Josiah Smith felt safer out in the woodlands and fields than he did at home the reason was the beatings he suffered if he was under foot. While he was hiding in the woodlands he taught himself to track. In the end he could tell who and what had passed by. This led to working out what things were and if they were good to eat. That led to how to kill them when you have nothing other than what you can pick up. He taught himself how to throw pebbles hard and accurately.

Now he could take game home and that meant no beatings. He liked no beatings and took home game regularly. He did so until the day he was caught. Normally he would have been hoisted up on a tree branch with a rope round his neck, he was lucky, he was sent for transportation.
