Matthew Collins works for an up-market estate agency in the West Country. He lives with his long-term partner, Sandra. She worries that he still has feelings for Charlotte, his ex-wife, who lives miles away in Sussex.

When Sandra's frail old mother has an accident, Sandra wants her to move in with them. Matthew disagrees for many reasons. It becomes a constant cause of friction.

With the housing question still unresolved, a career opportunity comes his way. As it would involve the couple moving to Sussex, he has to weigh it against the certainty of Sandra's worries about Charlotte being intensified. He does his best to find an answer to both problems by his familiar reliance on evasions, half-truths and outright lies.
