New Delhi was intended to impress and to encapsulate the values of the British Empire, in other words to project 'soft' power. This book aims to provide a rounded picture of the new city, not just in terms of the architecture but of the people who designed and built it and those who lived there. The book focuses on: - the residential buildings and their gardens - the 'hard' power of the Indian Army's military 'cantonment' - the first inhabitants: architects, Viceroys, British and Indian administrators, soldiers, Indian domestic staff and Indian PrincesThe book is illustrated with numerous photographs, maps and diagrams. All sales proceeds will be donated to Asha, a charity which aims to transform the lives of slum dwellers in present day Delhi.
