This is the first volume of the History of the Emergency Medical Services, which was first published in October 1952. It contains the history of these services in England and Wales, with a necessary account of the inception and of the work carried out successfully by all its component parts when put to the strain.

This is the story of the periods of active operations, including operations on the Continent - evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk 1939-40, and in 1944 the invasion of Europe, along with enemy attacks from the air by day and night. Amongst the many subjects included are the Mortuary Service; Modifications in First Aid; Inter Service Training; Flying Bombs and Long-Range Rockets.

In 'The Emergency Medical Services', the reader will find the prototype of the major part of the National Health Service, brought into being soon after the war, which was founded on many of the basic principles which had proven their value during the war.
