From the moment of birth the space between child and parent increases. Part of the work of a child is to establish his/her own identity. All children pass through the stage of developing their own autonomy. The phrase "you are not the boss of me" has appeared in novels, movies, television programs and from the mouths of our own babes. Sometimes the establishment of autonomy has results that are far from satisfactory but hopefully children learn some valuable life lessons and parents learn to let go.
