The Transition
Robert Allen
The transition from the 70's to the 80's, and the 80's to the 90's produced an extreme ideology amid my era. I went from the day to day simplicities of being an average kid growing up in West Philly, to sitting inside of a 6 x 9 cell processing whether or not I would receive the death penalty. What became ever-evolving was the way I thought. The way I viewed my reality then, versus the way I began to as I matured. As life continued to happen all around me, and to me, I developed a way of understanding in making sense of the world as it continued to unfold. The most extreme event of my life wasn't receiving a life sentence at 16 years old, nor being responsible for taking someone else's life; it was having the time to grow, learn, become accountable, and making sense of all that was real throughout my journey as compared to the distorted values I grew up idolizing. "The Transition" takes the reader through my process. As evaluated from the perspective of a mind capable of making sense of a retrospective inclusion of mistakes made, and lessons learned. I am a living example that miracles do happen, but with all good things in life, anything worth having never comes easy.
