Carl Winters is one of the residents at Happy Trails Retirement Village. He is also a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, a Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star. As a Gunny Sergeant in January of 1968, Carl led his squad of marines, who were outnumbered and outgunned, in the taking of Hill 479. Carl is a bona fide war hero. Emma Griffin is a talented writer who is writing a book about Carl and the taking of Hill 479. But when Harriet finds Emma's body floating in the Happy Trails lake, questions are raised about what really happened in the taking of Hill 479.
