The entire opera is based on the Henry James novel, On the Wings of a Dove. In this final scene Mariana (soprano) has just left the hut of the Old Market Woman with a potion in a desperate attempt to create a magic spell for her and her impoverished lover, Kai (bass), so that they can be married and live together happily. After encountering each other in the street, they have a tryst in their usual dingy hotel room where no one will find them. Kai is not convinced that a any potion will solve their problems, but believes Mariana doesn't have the love and courage to leave her rich aunt's clutches and face "come what may" in life.
