Edmond Rostand
CYRANO DE BERGERAC has been among the most popular dramas of the Western world since its first production in 1897. Though Edmond Rostand's story is entirely fictional, his characters bear the names and titles of historical figures. Rostand's plot is familiar to millions around the world who may never have witnessed nor read the play: Cyrano, the poet, provides the romantic lines for his less-creative cousin Christian in order that he might woo the beautiful Roxane, though he himself is just as deeply in love with her. This simple plot, however, thickens in royal jealousy and rivalry, all to the background and tragedy of the Thirty Years' War.
