A young woman, May falls in love with a soldier during the Second World War. She reluctantly leaves her native shores on the Island of, St Helena, to follow her him back to England. In England, she experiences, war, torn love, motherhood and prejudice. After the war, with the return of her beloved, she suffers heartache, living with a man she doesn't even know anymore. Social prejudice will not allow her to divorce, so she continues to endure her husband's abuse, for the sake of her daughter. When eventually her husband is forced to leave, May struggles to raise her daughter alone and finds new love, only to have it snatched away. In the twilight of her years, she eventually finds a man who dances with her on a bed of roses.
