A year and a half after losing her husband on the beach at Normandy, Emma Vincent receives another crushing blow, which forces her to leave her husband's beloved family farm and start life anew in another town in Nebraska. Just as she and her three children are beginning to adjust to their new life, Emma encounters a family member of her late husband's. After hearing his accounts of seeing Warren in Europe during the war, questions begin to arise about how Warren's death occurred; or whether he did actually die. As she takes steps to attempt to unravel this mystery, she begins to wonder if the truth is worth what the cost might be to her and her children.
