However, the brighter future is dimming, as we find ourselves amid a struggle between materialism and basic need; between unification and division. The impact of this struggle has splintered our communities, turning what was once a collective future into the pursuit of individual endeavors. How Deep Is Drowning is a poetic commentary on the journey from the darkness of slavery, through the perils of segregation, to the continuous challenges facing a mosaic America. Linking the key events of yesteryear to the current events of today, each poem serves as a call to action for the removal of barriers and falsehoods dividing our nation.
