My Hero is a tale of survival. It paints an ugly picture of my journey through childhood sexual abuse.
Shortly after my father was killed serving his country, my mother married a predator. I was less than one year old.
Not long after, my mother was confined to a state mental hospital. My brothers and I were left alone with our deranged stepfather for the next three years and the horror of our secret life began. It took me years to realize how much the abuse had distorted my view of reality and affected everything about my life--who I dated, who I married, how much education I wanted, and how I would feel about myself. My soul had been shattered like the glass in a picture window. How could it ever be put back together?
