Adolescent sexuality begins at puberty. It is characterized by increased sexual interests. Due to increased levels of androgen and estrogen in this period in adolescents, their thought processes are often directed towards sexuality. The risks associated with sexual activity are considerable if safe sex is not practiced. Adolescents are more likely to contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or have an unwanted pregnancy. The coinfection of STI is also common among adolescents. This can cause a major psychological and physiological effect on an adolescent. It is vital that prompt medical attention is provided to them to prevent complications and infertility. Pregnancy in adolescents can lead to abortion or miscarriage. Pregnant teenagers are also at high risk of obstetric fistula, low birth weight, etc. This book explores all the important aspects of adolescent reproductive health in the present day scenario.
