Any disorder that affects the joints is called arthritis. There are over 100 different types of arthritis. Some common forms are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, etc. The most common feature of all kinds of arthritis is pain. Joint stiffness, swelling and aching around the joints are other common symptoms. Decreased mobility combined with other symptoms, cause individuals to become obese and vulnerable to heart disease. Clinical examinations, X-rays and blood tests are performed for making a diagnosis. Based on the diagnosis of the arthritis, a treatment strategy is formed which may involve physical therapy, orthopedic bracing and medications. In eroding forms of arthritis, joint replacement surgery may be required. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relief medications offer a degree of relief to patients with arthritis. Exercises aimed at improving muscle strength, flexibility and endurance can be more effective than medications. The objective of this book is to give a general view of the different types of arthritis and their management strategies. It strives to provide a fair idea about this condition and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances in this domain. This book on arthritis is a collective contribution of a renowned group of international experts.
