A machine having an ultrasonic handpiece equipped with a titanium or steel tip is used while performing phacoemulsification. In the process of extracapsular cataract extraction, almost the entire natural lens is removed but the elastic lens capsule is left intact to allow the implantation of an intraocular lens.
