Excerpt: ... Jo. Whitgift. I can find no such thing in Clement'; but the matter is not great whether ho say so or no. The argument is stark naught; for, if this follow, that we may take no "example," "pattern," or testimony "of government," out of that time, because it was corrupt, then by the same reason must we not take examples of any time, no, not out of the apostles' time, because that was also corrupt, as I have said. Your arguments be passing strong: surely I marvel with what boldness you write them. Chapter ii. The Forty-first Division. T. C. Page 74, Sect. 2. And Socrates saith of the church of Rome and Alexandria, which were the most famous churches in the apostles' times, that about r) L Socrates fal-the year 430. the Roman and Alexandrian bishops, leaving the cap sacred function, were degenerate to a secular rule or dominion; whereupon we see that it is safe for us to go to the scriptures and to the apostles' times for to fetch our government and order; and that it is very dangerous to draw from those rivers the fountains whereof are troubled and corrupted, especially when as the ways whereby they run are muddier and more fenny than is the head itself. Jo. Whitgift. You falsify the words of Socrates; for thus he saith: soer. Lib. Tu.
