Halifax County is situated in the northern portion of North Carolina, the most northerly point of the county lacking only about six miles of touching the Virginia State line. The Roanoke river skirts its northeastern border and Fishing Creek, a tributary of the Tar river, bounds it on the southwest. A strip of Martin County joins Halifax on the south. Warren County is on the northwest. The author's narrative of Halifax County's history is in two parts: The first part consists of the History of the Halifax County, and the second part is entitled the Builders of the County. Part One is divided into 23 chapters, the topics of which include The Original Inhabitants, The Evolution of the County, Early Settlements, Formation of the County, the Revolutionary Period, Years Following the Revolution, the Social and Economic Development, Events Leading to the Civil War, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and many other topics. Part Two consists of the "Builders of the County," in which the author provides biographies of those individuals that contributed to the making of Halifax County and the state. The book also contains approximately 30 illustrations. Paperback, (1918), repr. 2012, Illus., Index, 307 pp.
