The distribution of reclaimed water through the use of dual water distribution systems, one for potable water and the other for nonpotable water, has become accepted practice in North America and throughout the developed world.

Water system managers and design engineers are increasingly turning to reclaimed water to help serve the community's needs for uses where more costly potable water is not required, such as for irrigation of public parks, cemeteries, and golf courses, many industrial processes, toilet flushing, and firefighting.
