The Lyman Copeland Draper Manuscript Collection, when it came to the Wisconsin Historical Society, was like the working files of many scholars, a mass of partially sorted papers. They were organized by Society staff into 491 volumes divided into 50 series of varying lengths, arranged by geographic area, subject and individual. The "Draper Series," of which this is Volume III, is devoted to the publication of original documentary material obtained, primarily, from the Draper Manuscript Collection. This book is a continuation of Volume II, which closed with the news of General Edward Hand taking command of Fort Pitt, which was a welcome assurance to the soldiers and residents of the Western frontier, and follows the conduct of the War through 1778 when General Hand was recalled to the Eastern field. The documents and material include contemporary reports, journals, memoranda, manuscripts, notes, muster rolls, lists of participants, interviews, and more. As with the previous volume, the editors transcribe numerous original documents, and make extensive use of footnotes to provide explanation and sources for further investigation.
