Lance Wright never expected to become district attorney for Madre County. It was nearly a sure thing that the rampant corruption in the California county would prevent the morally upright Lance from winning the election. In a shocking turn of events, Lance's clean campaign wins the day. While Lance's wife, Sandy, and sons, Brian and Gabe, are thrilled, Lance knows that this isn't entirely good news. Lance attracts the everlasting ire of Sheriff Ben Rhodes, a man who rules Madre County with an iron fist and who has bribed or intimidated nearly every local official into going along with his schemes.



On opening day of trout season, Lance takes seven-year-old Brian along on a fishing trip. The two accidentally witness one of Ben's violent acts, and the villainous sheriff decides to shut both of them up for good!
