According to Filipino island folklore, every life has two stages of destiny-hardships endured as a caterpillar that ultimately guides one's flight as a butterfly. Teesa Paruparo's family needed rescuing. Her father Manny's journey began in a cold and rundown orphanage in Carigara at the turn of the century. Its hardships only served to shape his dreams of a better life, but at what cost? Marita, her mother, lived the life of an island princess in the picturesque fishing village of De La Cruz.
