Maggie, Dan's changeling girlfriend, languishes in a fairy prison. Sister, the mortal stolen by fairies in exchange for Maggie, has the changeling's Truename and plans to use it to enslave her. And Dan? Dan and his friends Alice and Josh have passed through a gate to the world of Inland-a gate stranding them in thick tropical jungle.



There, Dan hopes to locate Sister before she can use Maggie's Truename to enslave her, but Sister proves difficult to locate, and the jungle is filled with danger. Voices whisper in the night, and every morning brings strange footprints, always moving away from Dan and his friends.



When Dan meets people from the normal world-the first he's discovered in Inland-he begins to doubt the reason he was first brought to the magical world. Does he have competition in his quest for the First Changing Beast? And if his rivals find the beast first, what will it mean for his future with Maggie?
