Rufus and Rose
Horatio Alger
This is last of six books in the Ragged Dick series Alger wrote about the life of struggling boys in New York City, a place that had to be pretty scary at the end of the 19th century. "Newsboys," sold newspapers one at a time on the streets, and "boot blacks" shined the shoes of those men they considered wealthy and concerned enough about how they looked. The story opens with Rufus, who has twice stolen his young and vulnerable sister, Rose, from a mean step-father, starting a new job on Wall Street, having been fortunate to have found $300, which had never been claimed. Another great book sure to keep readers turning pages. Included in this Illustrated Edition of the 1870 version of "Rufus and Rose" are all four original illustrations, rejuvenated, and 10 additional, iconic New York city illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.
