This book 'Public Sphere of Varanasi: Locating a city in colonial past' has demographic and anthropological focus on the first half of the 20th century. This work allows both exploring history and tradition of the world oldest living city as well as looking forward to the way in which this politically powerful part of the United Provinces defined the politics of republican India. The most important thing in this research work is the collection of data of the displaced persons a result of sectarian violence that so characterized north India at that time and exploration of the role of Banaras Hindu University in developing cultural consciousness in the crucial years of end of Empire period.
