Why fast? First of all, it's biblical and it's assumed by the Lord to be something that his followers will do: "But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly" (Matthew 6:17-18).



Why forty days? Well, to emulate Jesus, and Moses, and Elijah. As you peruse these pages, you will see that one value of the longer fast is the depth and breadth of the subject matter that the Lord can bring to mind, given the opportunity to be heard above the noise of everyday life.



Fasting is a rarely employed spiritual discipline, which can bring cleansing of body and clarity of mind. It's almost as if God were saying, "Now that I have your undivided attention, let's consider what it means to have clean hands and a pure heart. Let's meditate on things like holiness, dedication, discernment, and the spiritual power that comes from loving me with your whole heart and being loved in the same way by me."
