Robert Matthews is a battle weary Police Sergeant in Southend on Sea, a busy seaside town in the Thames corridor and has become drained by the violence and high crime rate that prevail. However, when people start dropping dead around him he pursues the possibility of a bizarre connection. Very soon he is asking not only who, but why and, more especially, why me? These traumatic incidents soon begin to overlap with escalating events in his private life which drag him downwards into a spiral of despair.
