Electra
Sophocles
In medieval Greek mythology, Electra was the daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra, and thus princess of Argos. Electra and her brother Orestes plotted revenge against their mother Clytemnestra and stepfather Aegisthus for the murder of their father, Agamemnon. Electra is one of the most popular medieval mythological characters in the ancient & classical Greek tragedies, and she is the main character in two ancient & classical Greek tragedies, Electra by Sophocles and Electra by Euripides. The date of Sophocles' Electra tragedy is not known but many scholars date the tragedy at 401 BC and towards the latter end of Sophocles' career. Sophocles' Electra is set in the city of Argos a few years after the Trojan war, it recounts the tale of Electra and the vengeance that she and her brother Orestes take on their mother and stepfather. Electra is a literature & fiction classic and is often required reading for courses that encompass dramas & plays, medieval literature, and ancient & classical literature.
