Erica is about to become one of the fancy adventurers who camp on Quirni but she will go far, far further than any others ever did. She looks like her cousin, Matilda, who has been accused of killing six thousand people. The Defense Delegate apparently rigged the trial and acquitted Matilda then hid her away. The tenants of Quirni want Matilda to hang for her crimes and they mistake Erica for her. Erica must flee the settled area of the planet. As a city girl, she must either learn to survive in the wilderness alone on a world with poison water and deadly animals or go along with the Defense Delegate's plans. Erica was already in Delegate custody once. They put her in an institution, medicated her, and broke her. She won't go back so she heads into the wilderness. But Erica can't avoid the townsfolk. A Delegate agent saves her. After that she is in their custody with no choice but to go where taken, which seems to be North towards Matilda. Erica fears the Delegate's plans. Will they save Matilda by using Erica as her double? Why else protect Matilda? Why else would they Erica go North?
